Braided Faux-Hawk With Flair

This is the style I did on C's hair last night.  She thinks it looks like a mohawk, so that's what we'll call it! (:  It's pretty easy to see what I did here, but I'll explain anyway...
After I detangled and moisturized her hair, I started by making the big braid in the middle of her head. Then I did 2 small cornrows on each side, going straight back.  I was going to just make all the braids going straight back, but I felt like being a little more creative...

I did 4 cornrows starting from the top of the big braid going down and over the other 2 cornrows, and then I just braided the rest of her hair straight back.

Her braids always curl on their own, this morning they were a little wavy, as you can see here.
Before C went to school, I added the Bee Mine Growth Serum we bought to her scalp.
I was happy to see that her ends didn't need to be moisturized. Even though I just did the style last night her hair usually absorbs everything pretty fast!  I moisturized her ends with a little Bee Mine Curly Butter anyway, just to make sure her hair stays moisturized all day.
I'm thinking I like the Bee Mine Curly Butter, but we'll see how her hair looks later on today, and tomorrow morning!
This style took an hour to complete.  Stay tuned to see how we switch this up!

Wigs For Kids

My friend has a family member who is dealing with cancer, and has lost her hair do to the chemotherapy she has to go through.  I decided to help her find a place where she could get a wig, and I found this website.

You can go check out the website to donate your own hair or get a wig for a child who needs one.

Catwalk Oatmeal And Honey Conditioner- Review

I got this Oatmeal and Honey Conditioner from Catwalk at my grocery store.  It was $13.99 for an 8.5 oz. bottle.

*Product Description...
Oatmeal & Honey Treatment Conditioner provides comfort food for your hair. Helps repair chemically treated or damaged hair with soy and wheat protein while enhancing moisture and shine. The Soothing aroma invigorates your mind, body and soul.

*Ingredients...
Aqua (Water) (Water), Cetearyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Persea Gratissima Fruit Extract (Avocado), Wheat Amino Acid, Quaternium 79 Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract (Oat), Panthenol, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Mel (Honey), Buxus Sempervirens Leaf Extract, Santalum Album (Sandalwood) Oil (Sandalwood), Pogostemon Cablin Oil, Juniperus Communis Fruit Extract, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Stearalkonium
Chloride, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Cetrimonium Bromide, Parfum (Fragrance), Benzyl Benzoate, Coumarin
I realize some of the ingredients aren't the best, but we used it anyway to see how we would like it!

This actually worked really well for us!  Whether my daughter's hair is kept in a protective style or left down and free, it gets knots and tangles!

I was worried when I came across this knot! Worried that I might have to get out the hair scissors.
I put about a dime sized amount of the Catwalk Oatmeal and Honey Conditioner on the knot, then left it alone to finish detangling the rest of C's hair.  When I came back to the knot it was completely GONE!
If you don't have a favorite conditioner, or are just looking for something new to try, I would recommend this!
*Note- Since I don't like all of the ingredients in this, I might mostly just be using it during washing for spot detangling until I get a better quality conditioner.

Starting Day 1 With Bee Mine Growth Serum

I got my shipment of Bee mine products yesterday, and I was very excited to try it.
I wet C's hair and detangled it.  I applied Bee Mine No Sulfur Serum to her entire scalp, and moisturized with Bee Mine Curly Butter. This photo is to show the length of her hair now, and hopefully soon I will be posting photos of growth!
C's type 3C hair is to the middle of her back when wet, after detangling.  During her wash, or when I straighten it, her hair is almost to her butt. (I don't use a flat iron very often) When C's hair is dry, it shrinks up to just a little longer than shoulder length.
Eventually, my goal is to grow C's hair to waist length, or as long as possible.

As I stated, I just got the Bee Mine products, and this is my first time using them.
Her hair looked beautiful right after I applied the Growth Serum and Curly Butter,... but then again, her hair always looks this way when it is wet! So I waited for her hair to dry. I didn't put any style in it, I wanted to see how it would make her hair look all on its own. We do like to leave her hair left down now and then.
I did band it up to avoid tangling.
So far, I'm not sure if I like these Bee Mine products or not...
C's hair seemed a little weighed down, and kind of oily. HOWEVER,... I know that I probably went a little over the top with both the Curly Butter and the Growth Serum.  Tomorrow is her regular wash day, so we will see how it does on freshly washed hair. I'm also going to style C's hair tomorrow, I can't wait to see the results the Curly Butter might give! Check back tomorrow to find out...

Half-Rows Into Twisted Ponys

*Read below to find the product I've been using!
This style started off as just cornrows going halfway back, and the back was left down.  I don't like to leave my daughters hair down too often or for too long, since it knots up very easily, so I switched the style a little today.  These cornrows were done 3 days ago, still looking fresh!...

I like to do my cornrows without adding any rubber bands, etc. I do this by just continuing with a regular braid once I reach the end of each cornrow, about a half inch past the part.
I've been wanting to try these snap on beads (barrette beads) since Rose first posted them here, and I finally decided on a cute style to try them on! So, as you can see, I just added a barrette bead to the end of each cornrow for a quick and easy way to add a little color and flair.

I pulled the cornrows back into 2 ponytails, and did some quick twists. I love the barrette beads and I'll be planning more styles to use them on! They are fast and easy to apply, and can be easily switched to match any outfit.
Now I'd like to point out how shiny and moist the hair looks here...
Lately I've been using Rose's product for curly hair, called 'Curl-icous' while I wait on my shipment of Bee Mine to arrive.
This will be my first time trying Bee Mine, so I can't say that 'Curl-icous' is better, or even as good of a product, but it is a pretty good product, and much cheaper! 'Curl-icous' is also ORGANIC and contains NO petrolatum or mineral oil, so it's a good choice!
I'll be sure to let you know how it compares to Bee Mine once I get it, so check back soon!

Here And There Cornrows

I had no particular design in mind when I started this style. I just started braiding, and this is what I ended up with.  A friend of mine said that it kind of reminded her of a Brittish flag.

I actually did this style over Christmas break, and I liked it so much I decided to do it again, only I switched it up a little. Here are some pictures from the first time I did the style (sorry the pictures are bad, I accidently deleted them from my camera's memory card so I had to take a picture of the original picture... Does that make sence?)

I think it's pretty obvious, so I don't have to explain what I did on the top! On the sides, I did one twisty braid. If you notice, on the left side of her head I started the twisty braid near the braids on top, going towards her face. On the right side of her head, I started the twisty braid in the front part of her hair, just for a little extra variety.
Heres a picture from the second time I did the style...

It's basically the same, only this time, I just did regular cornrows going down the sides instead of the twisty braids.  I did'nt get a picture of it, but in the front, it's actually 2 cornrows, and I braided them together to make one single braid.
I guess maybe it looks a little like a Brittish flag.... I'm not sure how much I like this style now that I'm seeing it again, but it's my own!
I did a nice Valentines Day style (I think it's my best work yet) that I wish I could show you, however, I did'nt get permission to use it from the blogger I borrowed the it from!  Hopefully I can come up with more of my own styles soon that I like as much to share with you all!

After Combing- Is it breakage or shedding?

Have you ever wondered if the loose hair you get after finger detangling, combing or brushing is breakage or just shed hair? Here are some good things to help you decide!
If you have excessive breakage..you'll see a whole bunch of hairs coming out in different lengths with no white bulb on the end every time you comb, brush, or finger comb your hair. Then you know you need to change your manipulation practices and check to make sure your hair has a proper protein/moisture balance. Or it could be just your hair needs some extra emollients in a conditioner so it's easier to comb and less prone to breaking.
*If you detangle every day you should only lose a little bit of hair.We shed about a 100 hairs per day If you have a regular routine for how often you detangle your hair, you should see about the same amount of shed hairs each time.
Some tips you may already know... But it doesnt hurt to see them again! :)
 1. Hair naturally sheds. The amount a person sheds varies from person to person based on your individual make-up and how often you detangle.

2. Breakage is not a "normal" thing and is often the result of a protein to moisture balance. One may experience  breakage during transitioning, which is not alarming.

3. Inspect the hair in your comb or brush to determine if your hair is simply shedding or breaking. Hair that has shed will have the root attached (it looks like a small white bead).

4. When you comb your hair make sure you are using conditioner or something with a lot of slip. Use a wide tooth shower comb, Denman brush, or another detangling comb (I always finger detangle my daughters hair first) Always detangle from tip to root.

5. Comb your hair in sections and compare the amount that is shed from section to section. If you are loosing a large amount in a particular section, give a closer inspection.

6. Sleep on a satin scarf and/or pillow case to protect your hair.

7. If you notice excessive hair loss go see a dermatologist.

8. When trying new products, change 1 thing in your regimen at a time so if you do have hair loss, you can pinpoint it back to that thing.

9. Stress, diet, medication and hormones can also cause hair loss so talk to your PCP if you see changes. It is not unusal for women to see changes in hair loss corresponding with your monthly cycle.

10. Lastly hair loss can also change seasonally. It is not unusual to shed more hair during the summer months or to shed more when seasons are changing.

Check back later next week to see how I handle knots/tangles on my daughters fine 3c hair!
*Im going to attempt to make our first video!

Twisty Braided 'Pony Hawk' With Curls

This is one of my favorite braided mohawk styles because it combines a few of my favorite looks...
I like styles with cornrows, and I like ponytails but I just LOVE the curls! With this, we got a little bit of each of those  styles. I planned on braiding the cornrows all the way to the end and adding beads, but I decided I wanted to see the curls more, so this is what I ended up with!

I started with detangled hair, as always.
First, I parted C's hair straight down the middle.  I parted out 2 ponytails in front, put them into big 2 strand twists, and added accessories.
To protect the hair line, I made a protective cornrow around each ponytail.
I tied the left section of hair off with a ponytail and cornrowed the right section towards the part line.  Once I cornrowed all the way to the part line, I kept braiding about an inch of hair.  That way I didn't have to add a rubber band to the end of each braid.  When I was finished, I gathered 2 cornrows from each side and added a rubber band.  This made it so that I only had 3 rubber bands in C's hair rather than 6, which made this style easier to take down and didn't cause as much damage as it would have if I had added a rubber band to each braid.
I hope that makes sence! :)

This style took around an hour to do.  We used BB hair lotion with castor oil and a little coconut oil.
To prevent her hair from tangling up too much, I braided the loose hair into one large braid at night and she slept with a sleep cap to keep it neat.

Barrette beads!

These snap on barrette beads are great, and the best part is you dont have to know how to APPLY beads to use these!
These beads can be snapped onto the hair any place, they dont have to be used only at the ends of hair like traditional beads! When snapped shut, they are slightly bigger than regular size beads and can be used to hold beads instead of rubber bands. Each snap features an animal face or bow. Its not visible from this photo, but there are grips inside, like a barrette, to hold them in place.

The Curl Tamer

For my very first post, I want to tell you about this product called The Curl Tamer!
I'm sure you have all probably heard of The Tangle Teaser. It has been on all the hair blogs. So you're wondering what's different about The Curl Tamer?
Just like The Tangle Teaser, The Curl Tamer has soft, pliable AND seamless bristles, and The Curl Tamer comes in every color. It is shaped like an octagon and is easier to hold yet easy to control beause it has a ring for your finger to slide into. The Curl Tamer works just as well as The Tangle Teaser at removing small knots and tangles, yet there is one big difference between The Tangle Teaser and The Curl Tamer.... The PRICE!
I have seen The Tangle Teaser costing $10 or more. The Curl Tamer costs just $7 and you get to pick your color! That's right- $7! I got this blue one and I fell in love with it the first time I tried it! I know you will too! Shipping is only $2 (still cheaper than the total cost of just one Tangle Teaser without shipping costs) And if you order $15 or more worth of merchandise, the shipping is free!
Besides this wonderful detangling tool, there are also a variety of beads, rubber bands, elastics, ballies, barrettes and more! (More pictures to come later, once the word gets out and I have a few followers!) :)
Want to order The Curl Tamer? Just send your Money Order of $9 (which includes shipping) payable to Ms. Danielle, to....
